Psammohelia
Fromentel, 1861, p. 176
Type Species
Psammohelia gibbosa Fromentel, 1861, p. 177; Subsequent Designation Beauvais 1964, p. 149
Type Specimen: Lectotype; MNHN M03757; Verified; Dry Preserved
Type Locality: Oxfordian from Charcenne (Haute Saône; France)
Beauvais designated P. gibbosa as the type species, when Wells, 1986 designated P. dendroidea. We did not find a designation earlier than 1964. The lectotype was described by Beauvais 1964, p. 149.
Classification
Description
Massive plocoid corallum. Finely granulose wide compact trabecular peritheca. Intercalicular increase. Circular deep calices. Radial elements are compact free straight costosepta arranged in hexameral symmetry. Probable auriculae at inner edge. Styliform columella present. Wall of unknown nature.
Remarks
The lectotype of P. gibbosa is strongly silicified and difficult to interpret. The columella can be observed in rare corallites. Psammohelia is probably a junior synonym of Heliocoenia or Stylohelia. The main character used by Fromentel and Koby to differenciate this genus was the granulose costae in peritheca that appear only near the corallites. It is interpreted here in the normal range of variability of Heliocoenia.
