paliform lobe radial elements internal region

Summary

lobate development of the most axial part of the distal margin of a septum closest to the calicular fossa or axial structure and separated from the outer part of the distal margin by a notch, cleft or inflexion of the margin. When strongly developed, the lobe can appear like a crest, lamella or flattened pillar. When weakly developed it can be little more than an inflexion, i.e. a conspicuously less steep part of the distal margin. In calicular view, a ring of paliform lobes forms a crown-like feature in the inner part of the calice, surrounding the calicular fossa or axial structure. In contrast to pali, paliform lobes are an integral part of the septum with which they are aligned, and are not formed by septal substitution. Homologous with axial lobes in Rugosa. See also Axial lobes, Palus.
