columella

Summary

pl. Columellae an axial structure, or part of an axial structure, that consists of a solid or apparently solid element. Styliform rods are cylindrical elements. Lamellar columellae include laths and median plates, often aligned with, or connected with, one or both of the directive septa (S) or with the cardinal and counter septa (R). Some apparently solid columellae consist of various almost indistinguishable elements fused together and are strictly axial structures, not columellae. The more loosely-structured composite axial structures of many scleractinians, often called 'columellae' are excluded here. See also Axial structure, Calicular boss.
