tubule

Summary

small open tubular passageway transversely connecting adjacent corallites. In fasciculate corals, tubules bridge across the free space between the corallites. In coenosteal forms, the tubules are surrounded by coenosteum. In forms with coenosteal platforms the tubules correspond to canals. The counterpart structure in cerioid forms is a mural pore. The tubules are very typical of tabulate corals, but very rarely occur in scleractinians. See also Coenosteal platforms, Exotheca, Mural pore.
