polycentric growth axis
Summary
an axis which consists of a single corallite system with several corallite centres, i.e. calices occur only at distal ends of the axes, not on the flanks. Centres may be clustered, or arranged serially (flabello-meandroid form). A branching system of clustered polycentric axes is represented by some fasciculate corals. A branching system of serial polycentric axes is represented by flabello-meandroid branching corals. See also Axial growth of colonies.
