Fasciseris

Alloiteau 1966, p 334

Type Species

Fasciseris sexipartitus Alloiteau and Dercourt 1966, p. 335 pl. 4 fig. 1-2; Monotypy

Type Specimen: Holotype; MNHN A26688; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Jurassic of Adhami -Mataranga (Greece)

A paratype exists with thin sections: A26689. The holotype is a sectioned specimen. A new polishing was recently (2011) realised.

Description

Phaceloid corallum with subcylindrical corallites. Incomplete thin epitheca covering unequal to subequal costae. Corallite outline subcircular to irregular in transverse section, irregularity resulting from intracalicular increase. Radial elements compact, probably free, bicuneiform straight, unequal in length and thickness. Distal edge not observed, inner edge probably inermous, lateral faces with granules whose the arrangement cannot be deciphered. No palis. Microstructure unknown. Hexameral symmetry. Vesicular endotheca, columella styliform or absent ? Synapticules absent. The wall is not completely peripheral and probably parathecal in nature.

Remarks

Alloiteau has described numerous synapticules for his genus. I suspect a misinterpretation of a chaetetid crust on a thin section of a paratype (n°A26689, named syntype by him when a holotype was already named by himself in the same initial publication). A synonymy with Placophyllia cannot be excluded especially when we consider that Alloiteau observed lamellar columella. One nominal species and two specimens known.
