Type Specimen: Holotype; PIN 4598/70; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Karakul-Ashu Pass, SE Pamirs. Bortepa svite, Late Norian, Late Triassic

The type material, collection MUGT no.1337-1, housed at the Dapartlment of Geology, Council of Minister, Tajiik SSR, has been transmitted to the museum of the Paleontological Institute (PIN), Academy of Sciences, Moskow.

Classification

Diagnosis

Thamnasterioid. Increase intracalicular. Radial elements compact, biseptal in type, made of subvertical trabeculae. Distal septal borders with rounded denticles, faces covered with menianes granulated on the edge. Columella made of trabecular septal offsets, styliform or sublamellar in shape. Endotheca vesicular.

Description

Genus well characterized in Melnikova 1983:47 (see above), 2001:63,pl.20,fig.4;pl.21,fig.2, and Roniewicz 1989:92. Microstructure illustrated in Roniewicz 1989:pl.23,figs.4b-d,f.

Comparisons

In the internal corallite structure and micromorphology of septa, Cuifastraea is similar to solitary Tropiphyllum Cuif, 1975 and phaceloid Gillastraea Melnikova,1983.

Remarks

At least 4 species are known.

  • Central Asia; Late Triassic
Rhaetian of the Northern Calcareous Alps and the Pamirs.
