Remarks

Recently, the genus-group Microsolenoida Duncan, 1884, was introduced as "Family Microsolenidae Duncan, 1884” (Löser, 2011). As clearly stated by Duncan (1884), he based his taxonomic framework on the descriptions provided by Milne Edwards (1860). However, on page 168, he describes the genus Mircosolena as having features such as "…..Septo-costae straight or curved …..". The same feature ("costae") he also mentions as one of the defining characteristics of his Alliance Microsolenoida. However, because one of the most important defining characteristics of the genus Microsolena is the lack of septo-costae, Duncan’s Alliance differs from both the characteristics seen in the type species of the genus Microsolena and the description of it provided by Milne Edwards (1860). Therefore, a family based on Duncan's Alliance Microsolenoida cannot be considered to be a synonym of the Family Microsoleniidae Koby, 1889, p. 569. Furthermore, the taxonomic position of the Alliance Microsolenoida remains unclear because based on the information provided by Duncan, it could belong to families of different suborders such as the family Actinacididae (Suborder Fungiina) or the family Latomeandridae (Suborder Microsolenina). Therefore, the Family Microsolenidae based on Duncan’s Alliance Microsolenoida represents a nomen dubium. Furthermore, because Koby's family represents a junior homonym, the family Comoseriidae de Fromentel, 1861, should be used as its replacements taxon.
