Reuss, 1874, vol. 3, p. 28

Stephanosmilia Reuss, 1874, vol. 3, p. 28 is a junior synonym (available and invalid), see Pattalophyllia Achiardi, 1867.

Type Species

Cyathophyllia annulata Reuss, 1868, vol. 1, p. 42, pl. 1, fig. 10; Subsequent Designation Reuss, 1874, vol. 3, p. 28

Type Specimen: Holotype; ; Not Traced; Unknown

Type Locality: Oligocene of Italy (Vicentin).

The syntypes of the type species are housed at GBA (Vienna) under 1874/3/54 #4 and #5.

In the original description Reuss (1874, p. 28) stated that the type specimens (1874/3/54 #4 and #5 = originals of the figures in Reuss, 1874, pl. 43, figs 4 and 5) lacked endothecal dissepiments (…‘Mangel an Endothecallamellen‘…). However, re-investigation of the type material revealed that endothecal dissepiments occur deeper in the corallum and there they are very abundant.

Stephanosmilia Reuss, 1974, represents a junior homonym of Stephanosmilia de Fromentel, 1862.
