Placastrea
Stoliczka, 1873, p. 33
Placastrea Stoliczka, 1873, p. 33 is a nomen dubium (unavailable).
Type Species
Placastrea elegans Stoliczka, 1873, p. 33, pl. 7, fig. 1; Original Designation Stoliczka, 1873, p. 33
Type Specimen: Holotype; ; Not Traced; Unknown
Type Locality: Albian of India
The holotype of the type species is housed at GIS (Calcutta) under 1790.
Remarks
According to Stoliczka (1873, p. 33), his newly created genus Placastrea had all characteristics of a 'true' Astrea but differed from it by the occurrence of a 'solid compressedly columnar columella' and 'denticles at inner ends of septa not enlarged'. This description in insufficient in that it remains unclear how Placastrea differed from faviid genera like e.g. Favites or Ovalastrea, or fungiid taxa like Siderastrea, or even mussid forms like Acanthastrea. Wells (1956) grouped Placastrea with Isastrea. Material that has recently been assigned to Placastrea elegans Stoliczka by Loser et al (2009) shows close affinities to the genus Ovalastrea.
