Classification
Comparisons
Like Siderastrea but also has intracalicinal-marginal budding and a trabecular columella that, in general, is arranged in form of a lamellar segment.
Remarks
The genus Phacellastraea is a massive, ramose (sometimes ?incrusting), cerioid colony with extracalicinal budding, costosepta that are compact to subcompact and strongly granulated laterally, has a trabecular columella formed by a few papillae, a small number of vesicular endothecal dissepiments, and synapticulothecal walls that are formed by several synapticular rings; thus, it very closely corresponds to Siderastrea. However, because Phacellastrea also seems to additionally show intracalicinal-marginal budding and has a columella that is formed by a few papillae which are generally arranged as a lamellar segment, it is placed as a subgenus of Siderastrea.
