Comastraea
Fromentel, 1863 (for 1862), p. 56
Beauvais 1964, p. 236 observed the type-specimen and synonymised Comastraea with Comoseris. Wells 1956 proposed a synonymy with Microphyllia.
Type Species
Latimaeandra sequana Fromentel, 1856, p. 862; Original Designation
Type Specimen: Syntype; MNHN A32893; Verified; Dry Preserved
Type Locality: Kimmeridgian (=Portlandien of de Fromentel), Mercey sur Saône (France)
Classification
Description
(From the syntype) Massive meandroid corallum with several corallites in the width of a valley. Radial elements compact or perforate ? anastomosed subequal straight or curved. Microstructure and microarchitecture unknown. Endotheca not observed, Centres of calices with a narrow fossa or a weak parietal columella. synapticules present, wall of unknown nature on top of collines.
Remarks
The genus is based on a badly preserved sample. The shape of collines and arrangement of calices in valleys suggest rather a synonymy with Comoseris. The genus was never used after its creation.
