Classification
Description
Plocoid corallum with corallites subcircular in outline. Peritheca made of costae and subhorizontal tabuloid dissepiments. Extracalicinal increase, Radial elements are compact, free, bicuneiform, straight to slightly curved, unequal costo-septa. They are not spread out on the tabulae. Distal edge, inner edge and lateral faces not ornamented. Only the costal part shows lateral expansions. Costae vertically discontinuous. Microstructure not well established. Peculiar hexameral symmetry in which S1 are in radial symmetry and following size orders are in bilateral symmetry. Consequently lateral and dorso-entral sectors delimited by the S1 do not have the same number of S2. Endotheca made of complete and incomplete tabulae and wide dissepiments, no columella, no synapticulae. Paraseptothecal wall.
Comparisons
The genus is distinct from Pseudocoenia and Cyathophora by the special arrangement of the septal apparatus. Another difference with Cyathophora is the vertical continuity of septa in Bilaterocoenia.
Remarks
The initial description is interestingly completed in Eliasova (1981). Five nominal species are known.
Distribution
- Central Europe; Late Jurassic - Early Cretaceous
