major septum

Summary

the larger of the two sizes of septa seen in many rugosans, as indicated by their greater length in transverse view. Major septa include the six protosepta. In the simplest case, majors commonly alternate in position and size with minors, but in other cases, the protosepta may differ in length from rest of the metaseptal majors, and in some taxa, there is no clear regular alternation of majors and minors. Major-minor alternation is also seen in some tabulate corals, and occasionally in scleractinians, though this terminology is not usually used for the latter. See also Metaseptum, Minor septum, Protoseptum, Septal cycle, Septal insertion, Septal size order.
