marginal increase mode

Summary

increase that takes place mostly, or entirely, at the growing margin of an entire corallum (e.g. circumoral increase). This constrains corallum development to laminar forms or to generally outward-spreading phases of colony growth, and can sometimes be attributed to ecological factors. It is not a mode of increase as such, but describes the area of a colonial corallum in which most new corallites appear, independently of the mode of the increase. See also Circumoral increase, Lamina.
