cloning increase

Summary

emergence of a new individual corallite (called 'offsets' in rugosan and tabulate taxonomy) by vegetative growth of a parent corallite. Clonoteny is the physical retention of clonal offspring by the parent coral (i.e. increase) and leads to colonies. Clonopary is the shedding of clonal offspring which then become new coralla. Clonopary may happen as an integral part of the life-cycle, or it may occur through passive breakage and fragmentation of parent coralla (e.g. both are shown by Fungia). In solitary corals, clonoparous corallites pass through a transient clonotenous stage, causing solitary taxa to appear colonial (e.g. Fungia). See also Colony, Increase.
