lonsdaleioid dissepiment

Summary

a large peripheral dissepiment, usually much wider than the interseptal spaces in the same corallite, and either not penetrated by the septa at all, or only partially penetrated by them usually as crests on the upper surfaces of the dissepiments. In transverse section, lonsdaleoid dissepiments commonly appear blister like, and the septal crests can appear like dashed lines aligned with their corresponding septa in the tabularium. The 'type example' is the rugosan coral, Lonsdaleia. In aphroid rugosans, lonsdaleoid dissepiments form a septa- and theca-free zone between corallites. See also Dissepiment.
