encrusting shape of colonial corallum

Summary

(sensu lato) attached to the substrate. Many corals are initiated by encrustation at a larval stage and may develop extensive areas of attachment to the substrate. However, 'encrusting' has come to be used in a particular sense to refer to sheet-like colonies, all, or most, of whose aboral surfaces remain attached to the substrate (i.e. the term combines colony shape and relationship to substrate.).
