monopodial corallite system

Summary

organization of corallites in which a single axial (apical) corallite forms a persistent central stem, with subsidiary radial corallites around it. Axial growth (if present) takes place by distal extension of the axial corallite with addition of new radials around the axial corallites. Oldest corallite therefore occurs at the apices of axes, next oldest at the bases of axes, and the youngest corallites are those closest to the distal end of the axial corallite. See also Sympodial corallite systems.
