polycentric calical arrangement

Summary

condition of colony organization in which the colony, or parts of the colony, consists of two or more corallites not separated from each other by wall structures (i.e. indefinite corallites) hence forming a polycentric continuum (e.g. thamnasterioid and mono-meandroid corals), i.e. the skeletal counterpart of the polystomodaeal condition. In colonies consisting of polycentric groups, these may be enclosed by their own wall structure. In some taxa, the number of centres within polycentric groups is more or less constant, e.g. dicentric, tricentric, etc. See also Polystomodaeal.
