hydnophoroid calical arrangement

Summary

Meandroid calical arrangement with discontinuous walls.

Orthography

This term derived from the name of the genus Hydnophora which is characterized by this calical arrangement.

This term is a sub-term of calical arrangement.

Description

A special case of cerio-meandroid organization characteristic of Hydnophora. Discontinuous portions of wall project upwards from the calicular surface as monticules, i.e. short and rounded (boss-like) to elongate ridges. Calicular valleys (serial polycentric systems) form a continuous system of interconnected rings and loops surrounding the monticules (i.e. 'circum-mural' organization). In sectional views, hydnophoroid corals can appear meandroid, i.e. monticules can easily be mistaken for lamellar columellae, and lamellar columellae if present, for walls. Term is also used for analagous development in ploco-meandroid corals, and (incorrectly) for discontinuous collines on the calicular surfaces corals without any true internal thecal structures.
