Summary

not attached to the substrate; generally used in distinction from 'fixed' (attached) to describe life mode of solitary corals. Free corals sometimes bear attachment scars if their life mode has changed ontogenetically (e.g. Fungia). Can also refer to a skeletal element which appears to be detached from similar or neighbouring structures (e.g. a columellar plate).
