theca

Summary

pl. Thecae, adj. Thecal cup-like, conical or cylindrical wall structure that surrounds one or more corallite centres. In discoidal and patellate corals, the theca is opened out into a flat or almost flat undersurface. In flabelloid and meandroid corals, the theca is elongated along the line of the corallite series. In polycentric corals, thecae are absent around individual centres, the only theca present being that which surrounds the entire colony. See also Holotheca, Meandroid, Polycentric, Wall.
