septal size order

Summary

a set of septa of the same size within a corallite, usually with respect to the distance they extend towards the axis, as seen in transverse view. Lowest order septa are the largest and sometimes also the thickest and/or the most elevated above the calicular fossa. Size orders may correspond to septal cycles, though several cycles may be grouped into the same size order. Also size orders may depart from the usual hexameral symmetry of most scleractinians. (Note that septal orders are directly observable whereas cycles can only be inferred from orders or determined from growth studies.) See also Septal cycles, Septal insertion.
