ramose growth axis

Summary

an axis which consists of numerous corallites whose calices cover the entire surface of the axis. Corallites within the axis may be sympodially or monopodially arranged. A single ramose axis is represented by corals that grow in a single ramose column. Branching systems of ramose axes are represented by columnar and ramose branching forms. Frondose corals are, in effect, very flat ramose forms. See also Axial growth of colonies.
