pourtales plan

Summary

petal-like septal plan, typical of many dendrophylliid corals in particular, in which the standard pattern of septal insertion in successive cycles and orders is affected by successive septal substitution. Each sextant ('petal') of the septal plan then consists of a nested 'deltaic' arrangement of contratingent septal systems enclosing marginal septal segments. See also Palus, Septal insertion, Septal substitution.
