axial growth

growth that has proceeded in a single direction at any one time (i.e. a growth axis), rather than in many simultaneous directions. Axial growth gives rise to columnar and branching colony forms. There are three kinds of growth axes: monocentric, polycentric and ramose. See Monocentric growth axis, Polycentric growth axis and Ramose growth axis.
