modularity

Summary

adj. Modular a module is a structure that is repeated in identical form (i.e. iterated) within a larger whole, and with regard to corals, it is conventionally applied to the iteration of corallites (and polyps) within colonies. Also applied (if present) to iterative systems of corallites (e.g. meandroid valley systems, branching axes). Corals can therefore show a modular hierarchy or 'modules of modules'. Term is not conventionally applied to repeated intracorallite, or intra-polyp elements (e.g. tentacles, septa, trabeculae.) All colonial corals are modular, and all solitary corals non-modular. See also Colony, Modular level.
