Summary

the characteristic way in which new corallites develop within a corallum or within particular taxa, generally expressed in terms of the relationship of new corallites to parent corallite structures. The following modes of increase are explained in separate entries elsewhere in this glossary: Ab-mural, Axial, Circummural, Circumoral, Coenosteal, Dichotomous, Extracalicular, Interstitial, 'Interstitial', Intracalicular, Intramural, Lateral, Marginal, Mural, Non-parricidal, Parricidal, Peripheral, Polycentric, Terminal. As explained, some of these are subcategories of others. This is an interim and partly simplified attempt to integrate terminology for the three coral groups. See also Cloning, Colony, Increase.
