median suture

Summary

the line seen in transverse sections of wall areas in those cerioid corals in which the adjacent corallites are enclosed by their own epitheca (default sense). A dark line marks the position of the contiguous ('back-to-back') epithecae. (Corallites of cerioid corals whose adjacent corallites are not enclosed by epitheca, as is typical of Scleractinia, share a single wall structure and show no median suture.) See also Cerioid, Epitheca.
