Diagnosis
Colony meandroid, calices in biforking and confluent series. Collins tectiform. Lower colony side without holotheca. In the series, calicular centers connected by septa. Synapticular wall in the collins; septa in the wall subconfluent. Radial elements with rare perforations, lateral faces with pennulae and meniana; distal margin crenulated, inner margin with projections which form a papillar columella. Endotheca dissepimental. Budding intracalicular with lamellar linkages.
Description
Descriptions of colony structure based on thin sections with the structurer of endotheca and micromorphology of septal sides is to be traced in Roniewicz 1966: 2242-243, pl. 22: 1-2a-c.
Comparisons
From the most similar genus Comophyllia d’Orbigny with corallites in straight and radial series, Microphyllia differs in not radial, but meandering arrangement of series.
Remarks
The genus, represented in the litterature by over 20 nominal species, was common especially in Late Jurassic and also Early Cretaceous carbonate platforms of Europe.
Distribution
- Southern Europe, Central Europe; Late Jurassic - Early Cretaceous
- North Africa; Late Jurassic
- South Asia; Late Jurassic
- Eastern Europe; Early Cretaceous
