Lithoseris

Koby, 1886, p. 338

Lithoseris Koby, 1886, p. 338 is a junior synonym (available and invalid), see Epistreptophyllum Milaschewitsch, 1876, p. 210.

For a long time, Lithoseris is considered as a junior synonym of Epistreptophyllum. This position is confirmed here after a revision of the type-material. It is also consistent for L. compressa, the other nominal species of Lithoseris

Type Species

Lithoseris gracilis_ Koby, 1886, p. 338, pl. 93 fig. 32; Subsequent Designation Vaughan (1905), p. 398

Type Specimen: Syntype; NMB D4763; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Oxfordian (Upper Jurassic) from St Ursanne (Switzerland)

Classification

Description

From the syntype. Solitary subcylindrical corallum. Calice infundibuliform. Epitheca not observed. Thin subequal costae. Corallite subcircular, slightly irregular in outline. Radial elements subcompact (?) anastomosed in a voluminous spongy or papillose (?) columella. Costo-septa rather constant in thickness from the outer to the inner edge, mostly straight. Distal edge dentate, not well preserved, lateral faces not observed, palis absent. Microstructure unknown. Clear radial symmetry, a hexameral arrangement cannot be deciphered, bilateral symmetry not seen. Endotheca not clearly observed. Concerning the synapticulae, the state of preservation does not allow a significant diagnostic. Wall very close to the periphery, possibly parathecal (?).

Remarks

A part of the high relief of the columella of the syntype could result in part from an excessive preparation. A soft additional preparation by sandblasting was realised in nov. 2011 by A. Heintz in order to see a little better the costae. The carving tracks around the columella are attenuated. Two Jurassic nominal species.
