Type Species

Isastraea oligocystis Frech, 1890: 24, pl. 5, fig. 8-8B; Monotypy Roniewicz 1989:30

Type Specimen: Holotype; BSPG AS XII 17; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Hammerkogel, Gosaukamm, Northern Calcareous Alps. Rhaetian, Late Triassic

Additional specimens from the Gosaukamm region: Schneckengraben, Riedelkar, Kesselwand-Rohrmoos are housed at the NHMW

Classification

Diagnosis

Cerioid, increasing through marginal intracalicular increase; wall bilaminar; septa of the highest order are dissociated into trabeculae; inner margin of other septa with trabecular projections, granules on lateral septal faces; endotheca of large subhorizontal elements. Microstructure: septal trabeculae subnormal to the wall; wall composed of fibres normal to the mural mid-line.

Description

Morphology and microstructure described and illustrated by Roniewicz, 1989:30, pl.2,fig.2,3; pl.3,fig.1-5.

Comparisons

In cerioid type of colony with double wall between the corallites divided by a fissure, the genus resembles Cerioheterastraea Cuif, 1976. They differ from each other in septal microstructure and type of increase: in the latter genus trabeculae are not identifiable and calices multiply by division with septal wall.

Remarks

Only one species is known.

Distribution

  • Southern Europe; Late Triassic
Rhaetian, Northern Calcareous Alps
