Diagnosis

Colonial thamnasterioid coral with circumoral increase, corallite centers distinct. Holotheca thin. Radial elements moderately thick, anastomosing, arranged isotropic initially and become parallel towards margin, with pennular trabeculae, regularly perforated. Pennulae symmetrical, curving upward with dentitions along the maeniana; maeniana occasionally discontinuous. Synapticulae and vesicular dissepiments common. Columella spongy (Pandey and Fürsich 2003: 108-110).

Comparisons

Kobya possesses lower septal and trabecular densities than in Dimorphararea de Fromentel 1861. Both show circumoral increase and pennular trabeculae and regularly perforate septa (Pandey et al. 1999: 1017).

Remarks

GREGORY (1900: 169) established the genus Kobya for forms with features intermediate between those of the family Ethmotidae GREGORY (Fungiida in which the septa are lamellar and cribriform) and Microsolenidae KOBY (GREGORY 1900: 170). Since then, the genus has been assigned to different families. WELLS (1956: F386) merged Kobya with Dimorphoseris DUNCAN (1872: 22) and grouped it with the family Synastraeidae ALLOITEAU (1952: 664). BEAUVAIS (1970c: 1124; 1978: 50), after examination of the topotype, concluded that Kobya GREGORY merits separation at the generic level, because the characters do not allow its placement within the Synastraeidae and the presence of divergent trabeculae suggest its placement within the family Haplaraeidae. The diagnostic features given above contradict GREGORY’S assumption (1900: 169-170) that the features of Kobya are intermediate between those of the family Ethmotidae GREGORY and Microsolenidae KOBY; it clearly possesses the characteristic features of the latter family (Morycowa and Roniewicz 1995). Three species of Kobya (K. crassolamellosa, K. cancellata and K. lenticulata) described from Kachchh by Gregory (1900: 170-172) were synonymised (Pandey and Fürsich 2003: 108). And 9 other nominal species cited by Löser 2000 in Cretaceous
