Gregorycoenia

Beauvais, 1978, p. 57

Gregorycoenia Beauvais, 1978, p. 57 is a nomen vanum (unavailable and invalid).

Beauvais 1978 created Gregorycoenia, a junior objective synonym of Stephanaxocaenia Alloiteau 1958. The nomenclatural mistake is related to the fact that none of these authors really based their diagnose on the syntypes of Gregory.

Type Species

Stephanocoenia magna (Gregory) 1900 p.65, pl. 13, fig. 9-12; pl. 14 fig.1-13; Original Designation Beauvais 1978, p. 57

Type Specimen: Holotype; ; Not Traced; Unknown

Beauvais 1978 has erroneously given a topotype n° R 5279 of the British Museum of Natural History as the type-bearing name.

Diagnosis

Corallum cerioid, sub-hemispherical, increase by both intracalicular and intercalicular budding. Calices hexagonal, pentagonal or subcircular in outline bounded by septo-parathecal wall, sometimes thickened by coenosteum. Septa compact, occasionally anastomosing with angular to subrounded granules along the lateral surface. Pali distinct, but incomplete. Costo-septa at times confluent and bicuneiform. Endothecal dissepiments tabular, mostly confined to lower part. Columella suboval to lamellar in cross-section. Holotheca thin and in concentric rings.

Remarks

Gregory (1900: 65) assigned G. magna to the genus Stephanocoenia Milne-Edwards and Haime, referred by Wells (1956: F371) to the family Astrocoeniidae Koby. Beauvais (1978: 57) placed Gregorycoenia to the Funginellidae Alloiteau (1952: 662). However, the diagnostic features of S. magna, such as intracalicular budding and lamellar columella, does not match those of Stephanocoenia and also the family Astrocoeniidae (Wells 1956: F370).
