Type Species

Grandifavia bendukidzeae Babaev, 1964, p. 36, pl. 9 fig. 2; Original Designation

Type Specimen: Holotype; 6; Not Traced; Unknown

Type Locality: Upper Oxfordian (Upper Jurassic) from Aghjakand (Gadrutsky area, Azerbaijan)

Description

Massive thamnasterioid corallum of plocoid aspect, with confluent radial elements between corallites and absent wall. Intracalicular increase. Radial elements are subcompact anastomosed subequal costosepta. There are often straight within the calice and sinuous between calices. Distal edge poorly ornamented, inner edge porous, lateral faces with granules, palis. Microstructure and microarchitecture unknown. Hexameral symmetry not deciphered, bilateral symmetry marked by curvature of septa. Dense endotheca made of vesicular dissepiments, columella spongious, synapticulae present (?).

Comparisons

The genus should be compared with Crateroseris Tomes whose the very special colonial structure is similar. But unfortunately we did not see the type material of Grandifavia and the microarchitectures of both genera cannot be compared from the literature. Babaev 1964 compared his genus with Favia and Nefocoenia.

Distribution

  • Eastern Europe; Late Jurassic
