Type Specimen: Holotype; PIN 4598/53; Verified; Dry Preserved
Type Locality: Mountain range between river valleys of BeIk and Khan-Yuly; SE Pamirs. Bortepa suite, Upper Norian/ Rhaetian , Late Triassic
The material consists of three fragments of colonies. Originally, the type specimens, coll. no. 1337-6, were deposited in Dushabe, the Department of Geology, Council of Ministry, Tajikistan (MUGT), then transmitted to the Paleontological Institutue, Academy of Sciences, Moscow (PIN, number above).
Classification
Diagnosis
Phaceloid. Corallites cylindrical. Increase intracalicular; corallites at early stages with diameter of about one-third of that of the adults. Septa numerous, thin, compact, made of vertical trabeculae. Menianes distributed alternately on septal sides; edges granulated. Columella rudimentary made of rare septal trabecular projections. Endotheca vesicular. Wall epithecal, pellicular.

Well described and illustrated in Melnikova 1983 and 2001: 65, pl. 18, fig.2..
Comparisons
General microstructural characteristics of genus Gillastraea corresponds to that of solitary Tropiphyllum Cuif, 1975, and thamnasterioid Cuifastraea Melnikova 1983, from which it differs in phaceloid growth form.
Remarks
One species is known.
