Foveolocyathus
Cairns, 1997, p. 26
Type Species
Trematotrochus verconis Dennant, 1904, p. 5, pl. 1, fig. 4; Original Designation
Type Specimen: Holotype; NMV F96127; Verified; Dry Preserved
Type Locality: Recent; St. Vincent Gulf, Victoria, 27-40 m
Neotype designated by Cairns and Parker (1992) was not necessary, as the holotype and paratypes exist at the NMV (Cairns, 2004:294); type species well described by Cairns and Parker (1992: 31) but as T. alternans.
Classification
Diagnosis
Corallum ceratoid, but elliptical in cross section; GCD up to 9 mm; theca imperforate, but exteriorly deeply pitted; costae granular, originating by trifurcation; septa hexamerally arranged in up to 4-almost 5 cycles (up to 72 septa); pali absent; columella papillose.
Comparisons
Differs from Trematotrochus by having imperforate theca and lacking pali.
Remarks
This genus and family was monographed by Cairns (1997), which included a phylogenetic analysis based on morphology. Four species, two of them known as fossils (Cairns, 2004).
