Type Locality: Recent: off Ceylon (Gulf of Manaar, west of Periya Paar), depth not given
Probably a junior synonym of C. pileus (Alcock, 1902c)(see Cairns, 1997), the latter species well described by Cairns (1989: 34).
Classification
Diagnosis
Corallum cuneiform , with a rounded base and elliptical in cross section; GCD up to 25 mm; theca imperforate; costae independent, ridged and serrate; septa hexamerally arranged in 4-5 cycles; pali present before all but last septal cycle (P1-3, 4); columella papillose to sublamellar.
Comparisons
Differs from Tropidocyathus by having ridged serrate independent costae and lacking alata edge costae.
Remarks
This genus and family was monographed by Cairns (1997), which included a phylogenetic analysis based on morphology. Four species: 2 Recent and two fossil (see Cairns, 1997). See Cairns (2004) for generic synonymy.
