Crassistella

Roniewicz, 1989: 113

Type Species

Stephanocoenia juvavica Frech, 1890: 36 Frech, 1890: 38, text-fig. on the left in page 38; Monotypy Roniewicz 1989:113

Type Specimen: Neotype; NHMW 1982/56/23-1; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Kesselwand-Rohrmoos (Törleck), Gosaukamm, Northern Calcareous Alps . Rhaetian, Late Triassic

In the literature, the species is described under the following generic names: Astrocoenia Milne Edwards and Haime; Stephanocoenia Milne Edwards et Haime; Actinastrea d'Orbigny; Toechastraea Volz; Tropiastraea Cuif, and Rhaetiastraea. Neotype established by Roniewicz 1989.

Classification

Diagnosis

Cerioid. Septa confluent. Columella trabecular, solid. Internal septal edges regularly denticulate. Endotheca vesicular. Septal lateral micromorphology granular. Budding intracalicular with indirect linkages. Trabeculae of 120-180 µm in radial diameter.

Description

Morphology and microstructure of the type species from the Northern Calcareous Alps are described and illustrated in Roniewicz 1989: 113, pl. 34: 1a,b, 2a-c; pl.35: 1a,b, 2a-c; and in Senowbari-Daryan 1980: pl. 5: fig. 3. Melnikova 1982: pl.16: 3-5 presented Pamirian specimens, but attributed it to Toechastraea.

Comparisons

The coral belong to genera of small calicular diameters (between 0.8-2.3 mm). Externally similar to Toechastraea Volz, 1890 from which differs in thick-trabecular (non-distichophylliid) microstructure. In confluent radial elements and intracalicular mode of increase it differs from other small-calicular genera.

Remarks

Two species are known.

Distribution

  • Southern Europe; Late Triassic
  • Central Asia; Late Triassic
Known from the Rhaetian of the Northern Calcareous Alps and from the Norian-Rhaetian of the SW Pamirs.
