Not Madrepora (Conocyathus) Brook, 1893: 160 (=Acropora).

Conocyathus Orbigny, 1849, p. 5 is a replacement taxon for Stylocyathus Reuss, 1856, p. 266.

Type Locality: Early Oligocene: Germany

Classification

Synonyms

Diagnosis

Corallum ceratoid, with a rounded base and circular in cross section; GCD up to 3.5 mm; theca imperforate but deeply pitted exteriorly; costae independent and finely granular, twice as many as septa; septa hexamerally arranged in 3 cycles; one crown of 6 P2; columella rudimentary or absent.

Comparisons

Differs from Turbinolia in lacking a columella and in having fewer external thecal pits (see Cairns, 1997: 22 for discussion).

Remarks

This genus and family was monographed by Cairns (1997), which included a phylogenetic analysis based on morphology. Eleven species, only 3 known from the Recent (see Cairns, 1998, 2004). Filkorn (1994) reviewed the fossil species.
