Koby, 1904, p. 67
Type Species
Connectastrea gregoryi Koby 1904, p. 67, pl. 29, fig. 1-4; Subsequent Designation Gregory, 1930
Type Specimen: Syntype; ?; Not Traced; Unknown
Type Locality: Upper Jurassic of Outeiro Pragao and "cap d'Espichel" (Portugal)
Description
Massive cerioid corallum with polygonal shallow corallites. Thick folded epitheca. Increase by intracalicinal septal budding with frequent rejuvenescence (supracalicinal gemmation of Koby). Radial elements are compact, free or anastomosed in the center. Distal edge with regular teeth. Microstructure unknown. Hexameral symmetry not deciphered. Endotheca made of concave tabuloid dissepiments , weak parietal columella. Synapticulae absent. Septothecal wall.
Comparisons
Connectastrea was confused with Amphiastrea (Vaughan and Wells 1943) probably because the rejunenescence process provides structures looking like a marginarium but the thecal septal and columellar structures are completely different. In Amphiastrea each corallite has its own epitheca, septa are not dentate and there is a columellar septum.
Remarks
Four Jurassic and one Cretaceous nominal species (Löser 2000).
Distribution
- Southern Europe, Eastern Europe, North Africa, Central Asia, South Asia, North America; Middle Jurassic - Early Cretaceous
