Coenotheca Quenstedt, 1879, p. 609 is a junior synonym (available and invalid), see Amblophyllia Orbigny, 1849, p.8.
Coenotheca is often treated as a junior synonym of Montlivaltia. It is a transitory morphogenus between Montlivaltia and Thecosmilia or Montlivaltia and Complexastrea. For more details see Lathuilière, 1996, 1996.

Coenotheca is often treated as a junior synonym of Montlivaltia. It is a transitory morphogenus between Montlivaltia and Thecosmilia or Montlivaltia and Complexastrea. For more details see Lathuilière, 1996, 1996. Wells has considered erroneously C. pyramidalis Quenstedt 1880 as the type-species. GPIT/AN /1135 should be designated as lectotype. Quenstedt included a complete series from Montlivatia mg to Complexastrea mg in his species Coenotheca zolleriana. We limit the following description to specimens having the morphology of the specimen GPIT/AN /1135.
Classification
Description
Colonial corallum with few mouths. The structure is mainly thamnasterioid but a preliminary wall can be erected. Lower surface with costae. Radial elements compact free exsert costosepta, bicuneiform, straight or curved. Distal edge with rhomboidal equal regular teeth, inner edge free and dentate, lateral faces with carinae arranged in a fan system. No palis. Microstructure montlivaltid. Hexameral symmetry not deciphered, bilateral symmetry marked by curvature of septa and the elongation of the distinct fossa. Endotheca of vesicular dissepiments. No columella, no synapticulae. Wall near the periphery of the corallum and nearly absent between corallites, paraseptothecal in nature.
