Coenastraea Etallon, 1862, p. 10 is a junior synonym (available and invalid), see Enallocoenia Orbigny, 1849, p. 7.

Type Species

Type Locality: not indicated in the initial description. Banné (Switzerland on the syntype label)

When Etallon wrote his additions and rectifications in 1862, the plates of the second part of Lethea bruntrutana were made but not yet published. They were published only in 1864. In 1862, Etallon mentioned the genus name Coenastrea and gave an indication: (Ray Montb. Pl. 6 fig. 23-24)- that is to say Thamnastrea thurmanni and T. sahleri. In 1864 Etallon will describe C. martis as the first species in his list and Wells 1956 indicated wrongly C. martis as the type species. Thamnastrea thurmanni was designated as the type species by Lathuilière Charbonnier and Pacaud (2017) (see this reference for more details).

Synonyms

Description

Ramose cerioid corallum. Strictly polygonal fairly deep corallites. Radial elements are free but the major septa may anastomose in the center. Septa unequal generally straight rather than curved. Lateral face and distal edge very finely dentate. Septa are not perfectly confluent and major septa of a corallite usually correspond to minor septa of the neighbouring corallite. No palis. Columella styliform to sublamellar. Cutting wall of unknown nature.
