Calamophyllia
Blainville, 1830, p. 312
Type Species
Calamophyllia striata Blainville, 1830, p. 312; Subsequent Designation Vaughan and Wells 1943
Type Specimen: Syntype; ?; Lost; Unknown
Type Locality: Miocene of St Paul lès Dax (Landes; France)
The initial description by de Blainville mentioned the locality of Dax and an indication to the pre Linnean work of Guettard 1770 that refers to the locality of St Paul lès Dax (see Alloiteau 1957, p. 175). Unfortunately, most of subsequent authors used this name for Jurassic phaceloid corals and it was used as a type genus of a family (Wells 1956). As the type specimen is lost, the type species, the genus and the family should be abandoned. See Calamophylliopsis, Calamoseris, Calameustolia, Rhabdophyllia…
