Balanophyllia

Wood, 1844, p. 11

Type Species

B. calyculus Wood, 1844, p. 11, no fig.; Monotypy

Type Specimen: Neotype; USNM 94469; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Late Pliocene: England

Neotype established by Cairns (2001). Type species best described and illustrated by Milne Edwards and Haime, 1850, p. 9-10, pl. 1, figs. 3a-d.------In a recent work (Loeser, 2016, p. 199), the neotype designation of B. calyculus by Cairns (2001, p. 14-15) was rejected, claiming that "[the neotype designation]…does not coincide with the requisites set up by the ICZN. Cairns did only revise the BMNH collections, not other collections in England suspected to have type material of Wood. Moreover, the neotype is uggly (sic!) and unsecctionned (sic!)." ------- However, after having consulted with recent and former ICZN Commissioners regarding similar issues, it is concluded that unless Loeser can prove that original material exists, Cairns neotype is considered valid. Also, see discussion under genus Negoporites.
