Turbinaria Ehrenberg, 1834, p. 81 is a junior synonym (available and invalid), see Explanaria Lamarck, 1816.
Turbinaria Ehrenberg represents an objective junior synonym of Gemmipora Blainville, 1830. According to Scheer (1991, p. 407), the holotype of type species was found in the Esper collection. Type species well described by Veron and Pichon (1980).

In a recent discussion on the genus Turbinaria Ehrenberg (Loser, 2016, p. 678), it was stated that the type material of the type species of this genus (=Madrepora crater Pallas, 1766) could not be a specimen of the Esper collection. This statement is incorrect, as the author (Loser) evidently ignored the fact that, as already pointed out by Scheer (1991, p. 407), the specimen SMF-5579 of the Esper collection housed at the Senckenberg (Frankfurt/Main) was clearly identified as the holotype of Madrepora crater Pallas, 1766.

Diagnosis
Extratentaular budding produces colonies of various shapes including vasiform, explanate, foliate, tabulate, encrusting, and hemispherical; corallites long, unifacially disposed; epitheca absent; septa arranged normally; columella well-developed, solid or spongy; zooxanthellate.
Remarks
This genus and family were monographed by Cairns (2001), which included a phylogenetic analysis based on morphology. 14 species, 6 known from the fossil record.
