Quenstedt, 1880, p. 684
Invalid, a junior synonym of Axosmilia
Axiphyllum spatiosum Quenstedt 1880, p.684, pl. 169, fig. 32; Subsequent Designation Wells 1986
Type Specimen: Syntype; GPIT AN/1144; Verified; Dry Preserved
Type Locality: Weisser Jura epsilon (=Upper Kimmeridgian) Gussenstadt (Germany).
The type-specimen is a silicified badly preserved coral. No section available.
Solitary trochoid corallum proximally curved. Calice infundibuliform. Costal part of radial elements very short if present and covered by a badly preserved epitheca. Corallite outline initially probably subcircular. Radial elements compact free bicuneiform to attenuated costo(?)septa, straight to slightly curved. Distal edge not preserved, inner edge free and apparently not dentate, lateral faces perhaps with small granules (difficult to distinguish from the effect of silicification). No palis. Microstructure unknown. Clear hexameral symmetry, bilateral symmetry marked by the lamellar columella, the curvature of lateral septa and the short dorso-ventral S1. Endotheca made of vesicular dissepiments sloping down from the wall to the center. Synapticulae absent. Wall peripheral and cutting of unknown nature.
Two nominal species were created by Quenstedt but they were not used. As it was nicely figured by Quenstedt, the proximal part of the type specimen shows a clear bilateral partition of the corallite in the proximal stage whose the orientation exactly corresponds to the dorso-ventral orientation of the adult stage. The genus was never used after Quenstedt (1880)
