Thecidiosmilia

Koby, 1888, p. 430

Type Species

Thecidiosmilia valvata Koby, 1888, p. 431, pl. 115 fig. 4; Monotypy

Type Specimen: Lectotype; NMB D 3667a; Verified; Other

Type Locality: Kimmeridgian (Astartien of Koby) from Bressaucourt, Bellevue, near Porrentruy (Switzerland)

The type specimen is a lectotype (by abusive designation of a holotype in Birenheide 1969). It was figured in Birenheide 1969, fig. 1-3 who realized a thin section. Despite the wonderfully preserved distal surface, the ontogenetic sequence of septal insertion depicted by Koby is not really convincing for the first stage (as already observed by Birenheide 1969).

Description

Massive cerioid corallum with corallites of a particular shape and growth form. Their external outline shows a wide convexity interpreted as the free growing side and several concavities related to the constraining neighbouring corallites. The convexities of neighbouring corallites have an approximatively common direction. This organisation is more obvious in section. Plicate epitheca. Radial elements compact, distally free, occasionally anastomosed in depth, straight to curved. An obvious cardinal septum placed at the opposite side of the convexity (the cardinal septum is at the “posterior side” according to Koby). Consequently the cardinal septa of the various corallites have a more or less common orientation. Lonsdaleoid septa present. Distal edge and lateral faces smooth, no palis. Strong bilateral symmetry because of the shape of the corallites, the cardinal septum much longer and thicker than others and the eccentric fossa.. Two zoned endotheca with a marginarium made of vesicular dissepiments mainly developed laterally and inner endotheca made of tabulae. No columella, no synapticulae. Pachythecal wall with a line of small black spots.
