Symbiangia

Wells, 1972, p. 25

Type Species

Thysanus vaughani Weisbord, 1971, p. 22, pl. 5, figs. 3-5, pl. 6, figs.; Original Designation

Type Specimen: Holotype; FSUG ; Not Traced; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Miocene (Chipola Formation): Florida

Classification

Diagnosis

Corallum colonial, forming small plocoid colonies by extracalicular budding, always encrusting dead gastropod shells that are inhabited by sipunculids; corallites cylindrical, tympanoid; theca costae; axial edges of all septa coarsely dentate; columella trabecular; endotheca absent.

Remarks

Monotypic. The association with sipunculid-inhabited gastropod shells appears to be an obligate commensalism, as it is for the caryophylliid genus Heterocyathus and the dendrophylliid Heteropsammia.
